Just trying to figure out why I am getting so many Shirley hits on my Family Tree DNA.. I tested at 67 markers but am only getting the hits on just 12 markers for this family. John Pinkney Shirley, Moses Shirley, and Kelly Shirley are some of the names involved. I think there was 11 matches and I never heard of any Shirley's in my tree before so it must be pretty far back. My furthest back relative that I'm 100% sure of on my paternal line is James Nipper b. abt. 1796 in Brunswick county Virginia and died in Roane County Tennessee in 1843. He was married to Catherine Laramore b. abt 1800 in N.C. His father was either Pace Nipper or Hudson Nipper. They were brothers that married 2 Vaughan sisters from VA. but also moved to TN. Anyone that know of a Nipper/Napper/Napier that married a Shirley, or a connection please let me know. Thank you! Terry

If your Shirley surname matches occur only when sorting at 12-markers and not 25, 36, 67, then your matches are most likely a coincidence. If Shirleys do not match your Y-DNA when expanding the # of markers, then you do not share a common Shirley in the male line.
Testing companies typically post FAQs that can help you better understand your results.
