Spotsylvania and Northumberland Virginia Connection?

I have a Shirely branch in my family tree and my wife does as well, and I'm trying to figure out if we are related.
My earliest confirmed Shirley ancestor is John Warfield Shirley III, 1760-1840 married I think to Francis Yates, father of Colonel John Warfield Shirley the IV, and they were from the county of Spotsylvania VA. Prior to him I have some info on two more generations of John Shirley's maybe leading to John Richard Shirley and Jane Price from nearby Northumberland county VA. John Richard and Jane trace more definitively through my wife's family via Argeland Senior and Argeland Junior which I have documented. What I have not been able to figure out is if there was a John, son of John Richard and Jane Price, brother of Argeland that leads directly to John Warfield Shirley III or not. They are near each other both geographically and in terms of time line, and both branches seem to have people of some prominence, but the three Johns in a row on my side are the weak link.
Any thoughts on that?
